Protect your Investment with the
Right Knowledge
Sunset Siding, Windows & Roofing, Inc., as a public service,
lists the following guidelines youll need when you begin
your contractual remodeling job.
Selecting a Professional Contractor:
- Employ an established contractor. Remember,
a warranty is only as good as the company that issues it. Be
sure there is a company in existence in the future to make good
on its promises.
- Look for a member of NARI (the National Association
of the Remodeling Industry). It is important that a company recognizes
its responsibilities to the public. The NARI symbol is your assurance
of professionalism.
- Check the remodeling contractor with the
Office of Consumer Affairs. Ask the contractor if they are listed
in the Dunn & Bradstreet Information Service. The inquiry number
for the Better Business Bureau is (312) 832 - 0500 (8 am to 5 pm, Mon. - Fri.). Call to ask if there are any complaints
registered against the contractor.
- Don't blindly accept the lowest bid when
soliciting your project. Be sure the price includes quality materials
and service. Remember, remodeling is an investment in your home.
A shoddy job can devalue your property, and youll have
to live with it.
- Ask for homeowner references and follow-up
on them. Satisfied customers are the most important asset of
a responsible remodeler.
- Ask your professional contractor to provide
proof of insurance covering workers compensation, property
damage and personal liability.
- Be sure that everything promised by the contractor
is in writing. Even the best contractor may forget if its
not on the agreement.
- Building permits are necessary when doing
structural work. Utilize a professional remodeling contractor,
they are familiar with details regarding local building codes
and permits.
* Carefully consider what you can afford.
Determine what you have to borrow and what monthly payments will
keep you within budget. Keep in mind, improvements you envision
will increase your homes value.
